TRIX is a momentum oscillator that shows the percentage change from a triple exponential smoothed moving average. It was developed in the early 1980s by Jack Hutson, editor of Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities magazine. TRIX features triple smoothing designed to filter out insignificant price movements.
In his article, he uses the logarithm of prices (in many versions, this is omitted). This version calculates the TRIX exactly as Jack Hutson described it, but instead of using Exponential Moving Average for smoothing, it uses T3 (which makes it even smoother than the original).
