TRIX is a momentum oscillator that shows the percentage change from a triple exponential smoothed moving average. It was developed in the early 1980s by Jack Hutson, editor of Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities magazine. TRIX features triple smoothing designed to filter out insignificant price movements.
In his article, he uses the logarithm of prices (in many versions, this is omitted). This version calculates TRIX exactly as described by Jack Hutson, but instead of using exponential moving averages for smoothing, it uses JMA (Jurik Moving Average - which makes it smoother than the original version) and responds very "fast" to market changes.
