Originally Volatility Mass was developed by Thomas Stridsman, who combined it with two averages (the original article has been published, with more explanation, below: Volatility Mass Stridsman ).
Instead of using the average for trend estimation, it uses the slope of the volatility mass. To reduce the number of signals (which can be quite large if the VQ is not filtered), some versions similar to this use the pips filter. This version uses a percentage of ATR (Average True Range) instead. The reasons are:
