Sideway Trend Indicator Review & Download 2025: How to Stop Losing Money in “Swingy” Markets Sideway Trend Indicator Review & Download 20

Introduction: The “Account Killer” No One Talks About

You've seen this happen a hundred times. You find the perfect buy signal on the Moving Average or MACD. You enter a transaction. The price rose 5 points, then plummeted 10 points, then rebounded. You are stopped out and your account slowly drains away.

This is called the “Sideways Chop.”

The biggest reason traders fail is not that they don’t know how to trade trends; it’s that they don’t know how to trade trends. It's that they don't know when SIT ON THEIR HANDS .

The Horizontal Trend Indicator for MetaTrader 4 (MT4) is the solution. It's a specialized tool designed to do one thing: tell you when the market is "flat." By identifying these areas, you can switch to a range scalping strategy or, more importantly, stay out of the market before the real move begins.

This review covers exactly how it works, the best setups for 2025, and our "box-breaking" strategy for catching bursts after a lull.

What is a sideways trend indicator?

The Horizontal Trend Indicator is a technical analysis tool used to scan for a lack of directional momentum in price movements. Unlike standard oscillators like the RSI that move up and down, this indicator specifically looks for "price compression."

It is usually displayed as a histogram or in a separate window below the chart around a "neutral level" (zero line) .

How to read the signal:

  • The “Flat” Zone: When the indicator line hovers closely around 0.00 (or within the neutral zone), the market is in a Sideways Trend . This means buyers and sellers are at war, but neither side is winning.
  • The “Active” Zone: When the indicator moves away from the zero line, it indicates that volatility is returning and a trend (up or down) is emerging.

Note: This is NOT a buy/sell signal generator. This is a "traffic light".

  • Red light (side): Stop trend trading.
  • Green light (valid): Trend trading resumes.

Review: Advantages and Disadvantages of Horizontal Trend Indicators

Is this tool worth adding to your diagrams? This is our honest conclusion after testing the EUR/USD and Gold (XAU/USD) currency pairs.

PROS (The Good)

  • Saves Money: It prevents you from making bad trades during low volume periods, such as the Asian trading session.
  • Visual Clarity: Instantly tells you if the market is "dead" without drawing manual trend lines.
  • Versatile: Works on any timeframe, but works great on M15 and H1.
  • Great Filter: The perfect companion for trend following Expert Advisors (EAs).

CONS (The Bad)

  • Lag: It takes several candles to realize that the market has gone flat.
  • Not a Trigger: You can't weigh this metric alone; you need a strategy (which we provide below).

Metric Settings: Adjusted for 2025

Depending on the specific version of the Sideway_Trend.ex4 file you downloaded, you will see some input. Here's how to optimize them:

  1. Period (default: 14 or 20):
    • Recommendation: Increase this to 24 if you trade volatile currency pairs such as GBP/JPY. This filters out "false" flat periods that are just brief pauses.
  2. Threshold/Deviation:
    • Recommendation: If your build has a "threshold" setting, tighten it. Smaller thresholds force the market to stay flat before the indicator alerts you, ensuring you only capture the narrowest range (which leads to the biggest breakouts).
  3. Alerts:
    • Recommendation: Set Breakout Alert to True . You want to be notified when the market wakes up.

Strategy: The "Box Break" System

Since sideways trend indicators tell us when the market is asleep, our strategy is to wait for it to wake up.

The Concept: The market operates in cycles: expansion (trend) → contraction (sideways) → expansion (trend). The longer the market remains sideways, the more explosive the breakout will be.

Tools Required:

  1. Horizontal Trend Indicator (Download below).
  2. Bollinger Bands (Default: 20, 2).
  3. Rectangle Tool (Standard in MT4).

Step 1: “Error checking” (identifying pitfalls)

Before looking for a trade, we must confirm that the market is indeed in distress.

  • Check the indicator: Is the horizontal trend line close to the zero level?
  • Check Bollinger Bands: Is the price range “squeezing” (narrowing) the price?
  • Action: If YES, draw a Rectangle Box around the high and low of the price range. DO NOT TRADE YET.

Step 2: Buy Setup (Breakout)

  1. Wait for sideways trend indicators to spike up (showing volume/volatility is coming back).
  2. Wait for a strong green candle to close above the top of the rectangular box drawn.
  3. Entry: Buy on the close of the breakout candle.
  4. Stop Loss: Place it back inside the box (about halfway down) or below the recent low.
  5. Take Profit: Measure the height of the box (e.g., 20 points) and aim the same distance upward (1:1 or 1:2 risk reward).

Step 3: Sales Setup (Broken Down)

  1. Wait for the sideways trend indicator to spike (showing volatility).
  2. Wait for a strong red candle to close BELOW the bottom of the rectangular box drawn.
  3. Entry: Sell on the close of the breakout candle.
  4. Stop Loss: Place it back inside the box (about half way).
  5. Take Profit: Set the same distance as the height of the box.

Pro Tip: If the breakout candle has a long wick (tail) and closes inside the box, ABORT . This is a "false out".

Sideway Trend Indicator

When to use it for “scalping” (range trading)

If you are a scalper, you can do the opposite. When a sideways trend indicator shows a flat market:

  1. Buy when price hits Bottom of the box.
  2. Sell when price hits Top of the box.
  3. Exit If the indicator signals a breakout, take action immediately.

How to install the Sideways Trend Indicator

  1. Download the file below (Sideway_Trend.ex4 or .mq4).
  2. Open your MetaTrader 4 platform.
  3. Go to File > Open Data Folder .
  4. Navigate to MQL4 > Indicators.
  5. Paste places the files into this folder.
  6. Restart MT4 or refresh your Navigator window.
  7. Drag the indicator onto the chart.

Frequently Asked Questions: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use it on Gold (XAUUSD)?

Yes! Gold often consolidates before making big moves. This indicator is great for identifying the "calm before the storm" on the gold H1 chart.

Does it repaint?

The concept of "redraw" does not strictly apply here, as it measures real-time volatility. However, the line may fluctuate slightly as the candle forms. Always wait for the candle to close.

What is the best time frame?

M15 and H1 are the best. On M1, "sideways" trends are often just noise. Daily ranges can last for months, which is too slow for most retail traders.

Final verdict: Should you use it?
