MTF MACD Bar Indicator Review 2025: Strategy, Setup and Free Download | Forex Indicator Download - MT4/MT5 Resource

Introduction: “Big Picture” Advantages

The number one reason traders fail is "tunnel vision." They stare at the M15 chart, see the buy signal, and then buy, completely ignoring that the H4 daily trend is collapsing.

The MTF (Multi Time Frame) MACD Histogram indicator solves this problem immediately.

Instead of switching back and forth between charts (which is annoying and confusing), this tool shows the trend momentum Higher time frame just below the current price candle. It converts the complex lines of standard MACD into a simple, color-coded histogram.

If you want to trade using the Smart Money process, this indicator will serve as your compass.

What is the MTF MACD bar indicator?

The MTF MACD histogram is a modified version of the classic Moving Average Convergence Divergence. Instead of showing you lines and histograms taking up space, it simplifies the data into a two-color bar system .

MTF MACD Bars

How to read the signal:

This indicator is usually located in a separate window and provides two key pieces of information:

  1. Trend direction (color):
    • Green/yellow-green: Bullish trend (MACD moving up).
    • Red / Tomato: Bearish trend (MACD moving downward).
  2. Trend alignment (rows):
    • Many versions of this indicator display two rows of bars.
    • Top Row: Displays signals from your Current Timeframe.
    • Bottom Row: Displays signals from a Higher time range (e.g. H1 trend shown on H4 chart).

The Logic: You only trade if BOTH rows are the same color. This ensures that you never swim against the current.

Review: Pros and Cons

Here are the results of our honest tests after running them on trend-heavy currency pairs such as GBP/JPY and Gold.

✅ PROS (The Good)

  • Zero Tunnel Vision: Forces you to respect higher time frame trends.
  • Visual Simplicity: There are no cross lines to interpret, just "red" or "green".
  • Flexible: You can set up to display any time range (for example, display daily trends on a 5-minute chart).
  • Filters Noise: Keeps you away from swing trades where shorter time frames are inconsistent with higher time frames.

❌ CONS (The Bad)

  • Lag: Like all MACD tools, it is a lagging indicator. You won't be able to snap to the exact top or bottom.
  • Repaint Risk (MTF): Crucial Note: The bar for the Higher Timeframe will update with higher candle patterns. Always wait for the higher timeframe candle to close before being 100% sure of the signal.

Strategy: "Trend Adjustment" System

The example strategy recommends buying when the bar turns green. That is too risky. In a strong downtrend you get little green bars (pullbacks) that expire immediately.

In order to rank this strategy as the best, we applied the “double opt-in” rule .

Settings and Settings

  1. MTF MACD bar indicator:
    • TimeFrame 1: Current (for example, H1).
    • TimeFrame 2: Higher (for example, H4 or 240 minutes).
  2. 200 EMA: Trend filter (main chart).
  3. Timeframe: M15 or H1 (execution).

1. “Consistent” buying settings

We only buy when short-term momentum is aligned with the long-term direction.

  1. The Filter: Price must be ABOVE the 200 EMA .
  2. The Setup: Waiting for a price correction. This Top Row (current TF) may temporarily turn red.
  3. The Trigger: Wait for the Top Row to turn GREEN again.
  4. Error checking (critical): The Bottom Row (Higher TF) must already be GREEN .
    • Rule: If the bottom row is red, DO NOT BUY . The general trend is down.
  5. Entry: Buy at the close of the candle.
  6. Stop Loss: Below recent swing lows.
  7. Take Profit: Follow the trend until the top row turns red.

2. “Align” sales settings

We only sell on floor drops.

  1. The Filter: Price must be BELOW the 200 EMA .
  2. The Setup: Waiting for the assembly. This Top Row may temporarily turn green.
  3. The Trigger: Wait for the Top Row to turn RED (Tomato) again.
  4. The False Check: The Bottom Row (Higher TF) must already be RED .
  5. Entry: Sell at the close of the candle.
  6. Stop Loss: Above recent swing highs.
  7. Take Profit: Follow the trend until the top row turns green.

Pro Tip: The most explosive trades occur when the top row changes color to match the bottom row immediately after a pullback to the 200 EMA.

Indicator Settings: How to Set Time Range

This is the tricky part for beginners. In the Input tab, you'll often see a setting called TimeFrame or TF_Bar_2. Usually you need to enter the quantity in minutes :

  • M15 = 15
  • H1 = 60
  • H4 = 240
  • Daily = 1440

Example: If you are trading an H1 chart , set the indicator's TimeFrame input to 240 . This will display H4 bars on the H1 chart.

Frequently Asked Questions: Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the bottom bar sometimes change color?

This is because the higher time frame candle has not closed yet. For example, if you look at the H1 bar on M15, the H1 bar is still forming four candles. Always wait for a higher time frame close if you want to be conservative.

Can I use it for reselling?

Yes. Set the chart to M1 or M5 and then set MTF MACD bar indicator to M15 or M30 . This allows your scalping trades to align with the 30-minute trend, greatly increasing your win rate.

What do "tomato" and "yellow-green" mean?

These are just the default MT4 color names. Tomato = bearish (red), chartreuse = bullish (green). You can change them to standard red/green in the Color tab.

Final verdict: Is it worth using?

Score: 5/5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The MTF MACD Bar Indicator is an essential tool for any impatient trader. It actually draws a "red light" or "green light" on your chart based on the higher time frame.

By forcing you to wait for "Dual Green" or "Dual Red" to align, it automatically filters out low-probability swing trades that drain your account.
