In many cases we need some way to measure volatility
Among other methods, this is a simple one: it is the ratio of (sum of price differences) to (sum of price differences) average. As simple as that, it seems to be detecting market fluctuations in an acceptable manner. As a reference point:
As can be seen, it can detect volatility changes normally even in "thin" markets (when the average differences are small and even small changes should be considered significant volatility changes)
