There are several versions of the super trend floating around the internet. One version is calculated using the CCI (Commodity Channel Index). Now, the way it is calculated is using the intersection of CCI with the zero line as a signal of a trend change. Implicitly, since the CCI will cross the zero line when price crosses the SMA (Simple Moving Average), this means that the supertrend is actually an indicator of price crossing the SMA. But that's not at all a super trend indicator as we know it :). ATR (Average True Range) is often added as a filter to these crossovers and then we get what is known as the "Super Trend" indicator.

Its use is as simple as calculation. Additionally, in order to add some content that is not normally available, you can select content to use as a filter. You can use

as a filter. Standard deviation tends to be "faster" than its ATR counterpart, so you'll need to do some experimentation when using it, but all in all, the signal is still usable (see example below).

You can use the color change of the signal.
