The advantage of CMA is that the current value of the time series must exceed the current volatility-related threshold in order for the filter to increase or decrease, avoiding spurious signals in weak phases. Simply put, it compares the squared variance between the corrected mean and the regular mean and decides whether the CMA should move forward.
