Indicator Overview

Divergence is one of the most interesting and widely used concepts in technical analysis , helping traders predict potential price trend changes. Simply put, divergence occurs when price and indicator behavior are inconsistent.

This divergence may indicate weakness in the current trend and alert traders to a possible change in price direction.

Bullish trend example

Positive divergence is observed on the daily chart of the CHF/JPY currency pair . While the pair’s price appears to be continuing its downward trend, the indicator is showing the opposite, setting higher highs.

This signal highlights the weakness of the downtrend and indicates that an uptrend may be starting.

Bearish trend example

A negative divergence was observed on the 30-minute chart of the EUR/USD currency pair . The price made a new high, but the indicator moved in the opposite direction, showing lower highs.

Differences between price and indicator movements can weaken the strength of a bullish trend.
