Ticks_Volume_Indicator - indicator for MetaTrader 5

Indicator calculated using quote volume.

In futures markets, volume data is reported with a one-day delay. To compensate for this, many analysts use a tick volume indicator (Tick Volume™): it allows you to track volume changes during the trading day.

Tick volume indicates the number of transactions executed within a certain period of time, but does not show the number of contracts per transaction. For example, 50 transactions can be processed per hour. But it’s not clear from that number how many contracts were signed for each deal. For example, it could be 50 orders for one lot or 50 orders for 100 lots. From this perspective, price changes do not reflect true trading volume. However, it is a valuable indicator because only it allows you to measure volumes with less latency, albeit at the expense of accuracy.

The indicator uses the SmoothAlgorithms.mqh library class (must be copied to terminal_data_folder\MQL5\Include). The use of the class "Average price series for intermediate calculations without using additional buffers" is described in detail in the article.

The indicator was first implemented in MQL4 and released in the code base on February 3, 2008.

Testing and risk control suggestions

  • First verify the default parameters in the strategy tester or demo account, and then adjust the symbol, period, spread and trading period one by one.
  • Scalping, grid, martin, and high-frequency strategies should focus on observing maximum drawdowns, consecutive losses, slippage, and trading frequency.
