Squeeze Index Indicator for MT4/MT5 FREE Download
What does the squeeze index measure?
The core function of the Squeeze Index is its ability to quantify the extent to which prices move within a narrow range. As the index value moves higher, it means that compression is increasing, which means that the price's range of fluctuations becomes more restricted. In this case, traders may look for upcoming breakout opportunities.
This indicator for MT4 cannot predict the direction of the breakout. Instead, it only focuses on range shrinkage and presents that shrinkage as a scale percentage.
Technical foundation and calculation
The methodology behind the Squeeze Index incorporates the concept of damping, whereby the magnitude of price movements decreases over time. This behavior is reflected by exponentially converging envelopes that form upper and lower bounds around price.
To determine the squeeze level, the indicator first calculates the distance between these envelope boundaries. Since the envelope converges toward the input via exponential behavior, the logarithm of the envelope gap is taken. The final squeeze value is then normalized using the relevant oscillator, presenting the result as a relative value between 0% and 100%.
This series of steps allows the indicator to reflect the degree to which recent price action has been "contained," quantitatively highlighting areas where price action appears to be weak or restrained.

This MT4 indicator is not a standalone trading indicator system. Nonetheless, it is very useful for your trading as a trader additional chart analysis for finding trade exit positions (TP/SL) etc. While the system can be used by traders of all experience levels, it may be helpful to practice trading on an MT4 demo account until you become consistent and confident enough to start using it. You can open a live or demo trading account with most Forex brokers.
Setup and customization
Traders have several adjustable parameters in the Squeeze Index and can tailor the indicator to their strategies:
- Convergence Factor – Indicates how quickly the exponential envelope converges to the input data. Higher values will generally reveal more areas of compression, although they may also falsely flag retracements as squeezes.
- Length – Set the length of time for price evaluation. Longer periods provide smoother output but reduce signal sensitivity.
- Src – defines the input source for indicator calculation (e.g. closing price).
The relationship between length and convergence factor is critical. A common approach is to set the convergence factor equal to the period or use a factor that doubles the length to achieve broader compression detection. However, aggressive settings may introduce false positives, especially during fast pullback modes.
How to read this indicator for MT4
When the MT4 Index indicator shows elevated values, it indicates increasing price compression. Highly squeezed markets often precede a breakout or the start of a directional trend. Conversely, lower values indicate looser price movements or a trending environment.
However, it should be noted that not every compression event results in a meaningful breakout. Traders often use the Squeeze Index along with other technical tools or price action analysis to validate any trading decision.
How to Use It
The Squeeze Index does not directly provide a buy or sell signal. Instead, it acts as an alert system for when the market may enter or exit a range-bound phase. Traders may take a rising squeeze index as a clue to monitor the chart more closely to prepare for a potential price breakout.
As a standalone indicator for MT4, its effectiveness often depends on how it is combined with other tools or strategies. For example, combining this with a momentum indicator or chart pattern may provide additional information on the potential direction of a breakout.
