ATP - Advanced Trading Concepts

Riding the wave against the current

My good friend FreddyFx reminded me of all the great work I have done in the past on FF, not only trying to become a good trader myself, but helping others become good traders along the way. So I decided to go back to my old title, and I started giving it to everything we were doing. The title is of course ATP - (Advanced Trading Philosophy). And, because there was no doubt in my mind that my last thread of testing turned into a trading wave. Therefore, I repeated the old name and simply quoted its content; Wave Trading.

However, this is a simple wave trade because I don't count the waves. However, if you would like to post a chart and explain how to calculate waves, you are more than welcome to do so. You just won’t see that from me.

I'm sure there are many threads similar to this, so it shows the power of wave trading. I happen to think I have the easiest way to perfect it.

When it comes to waves, the only thing I care about is:

(1) Does the new wave bring us higher highs, lower highs, higher lows, or lower lows?

(2) Is this a true wave, or a flat range with a small arc?

I just need to know the answers to these two questions to figure out what I want to do next!

Of course, you are welcome to edit as needed.

I set up my profile so that it's easy to pull up any 4 t/f of any pair I want so I can do it quickly and have a full picture of the larger, smaller, and current picture of the pair. This is a photo of only 1 pair. The rest are set up the same way, just click on the 4 t/f's of the pair. Does it make sense?

This indicator is one made for us by FerruFx in another thread. It has a lot of nice features, and a lot of nice adjustments that can be made to it that will instruct the indicators to send a signal if one, two, or three indicators align.

I tested this indicator for a few weeks and even put it into the strategy tester of MT4 and changed many settings. I have found that the best thing to do is to use the NLD indicator alone and determine the wave position after receiving an alert before I get to the computer.

So this indicator is not part of my template , but it is still a very powerful indicator and I put it here because you may want to use the indicator Wave Arrows to trade this system instead of using NLD, which is perfectly acceptable. However, no matter which indicator you use to sound the alarm, you still need to know the answers to these two very important questions.

This is the indicator I use for alerts. I set up an alert to be sent to my phone etc. when the color changes. Just because I get an alert doesn't mean it's time for me to trade. Before I do anything, I have to answer the two questions above. Then depending on my answer I either don't enter at all, enter immediately because of the color change, or wait until the bar closes and the NLD also closes with the color change.

34 EMA H/L/C

I call the combination of these three EMA indicators the highway. I won't go into too much detail about them and how they work, as there's a whole book you can read about them, and I'm happy to answer personal questions. I've used it many times in the past, and in the testing of the previous thread I brought it back and decided it should be kept instead of the channel.

9 EMA and 50 EMA

I use these two indicators to further validate trends and like that they happen to be part of some kind of price action S&R. 9EMA is also another good indicator that, along with NLD, can be used to determine wave behavior and even spot divergences. When the 9 EMA changes direction, answer your two questions and you're good to go!

The channel indicator is another indicator that can help show tops and bottoms and can be used to determine s/l and t/p points. I like using this tool on my charts because it gives the size of the candlestick relative to the space, among many other features.

Stochastic Oscillator 9,2,2 EMA

Stochastic is another tool we use when trying to determine whether we should take the NLD or 9 EMA wave signal. The simplest way to put it is that you should wait until Stochastic is above 80 to go short, and wait until Stochastic is below 20 to go long. You can even be more secure by modifying the O/B, O/S levels to 85, 15.

The second thing that the stochastic indicator is good at identifying is divergences. I'm not going to get into it here, but if you don't know what divergence is and you want to be a successful trader, I recommend you learn about it. There are tons of free materials available to help you master this powerful technique. But be careful as any indicator can give you a false divergence move and there is also an inverse divergence which is just a strong trade. If stochastics shows divergence and we get another wave signal, I might consider doubling down. However, if the stochastic MA is at a small angle and divergence occurs, beware of false divergence. The steeper the moving average, the better, because that's a true wave market. Flat moving averages can indicate a trend, and trends are stronger than divergences.

Another thing about the stochastic indicator is the value and signal ma provides you with information. If the value ma correlates with the signal ma on the 1-day chart, it will give you an idea of how to run trades on the 4-hour chart. Likewise, if this is true on the 4 hour chart, this would provide direction for potentially trading the 30m bar for some intraday fun.

Advanced Trading Philosophy: The Trading Rules of the System

1. Best Time Frames for Trading - I find it is always best to trade higher t/f's as they are the most powerful and in forex I want the power to be on my side. This means that 1 day and 4 hours will be the safest trading times. However, for day traders, or if you are like me and have the occasional few hours where you want to trade a smaller t/f, then this system will work with any t/f. My only advice is to try to trade in the direction of power, and if you are against power, make sure you know when to trade.

2. Trade with the trend - If the 9 EMA is below the 50 EMA, the main wave trade should be short only, while the continuation/momentum wave trade or divergence trade should be long. If the 9 EMA is above the 50 EMA, major wave trades should be long only, while continuation/momentum wave trades or divergence trades should be short.

Key Trade: 9 EMA is above 50 EMA (the opposite is true when 9 EMA is below 50 EMA)

A. Stochastic on the Stochastic Oscillator is below the 35 (inverse trade above 65) level.

B. Real time:

1. Stochastic Oscillator - Value Line Crosses Trigger Line

2. Non-Lagging Point (NLD) - point changes from a falling signal to an up signal (opposite trade changes from an up signal to a down signal)

C. Once both of these are found to be true, the rules of the main trade are met and it is safe to enter a long trade (a short trade in the opposite direction of the EMA).

3. Trade with the Trend - If the 9 EMA is below the 50 EMA, you should go long secondary or continuation/momentum wave trades. If the 9 EMA is above the 50 EMA, you should go short a secondary wave trade or a continuation/momentum wave trade.

Level 2/Momentum Trading: 9 EMA is above the 50 EMA (the opposite is true when the 9 EMA is below the 50 EMA)

A. Stochastic is trading above the 80 (reverse trading below 80) level on the Stochastic Oscillator.

B. Real time:

1. Stochastic Oscillator - Value Line Crosses Trigger Line

2. Non-Lagging Point (NLD) - point changes from an up signal to a down signal (reverse trade changes from a down signal to an up signal)

C. Once both of these are found to be true, the rules for secondary trading have been met and it is safe to enter a short trade (a long trade in the opposite direction of the EMA).

4. The Reality of Live Trading - The reality is that I set these rules based on the risk I am willing to take on placing a trade when we receive a signal change. I get some false positives when trading on a signal change and not waiting for the bar to close when the signal change is in place. Here's why I can tolerate the error signals I receive:

A.Loss will occur. I think that if I'm going to lose money by entering early, there's a good chance I'll lose money if I wait for the bar close when the signal is still valid.

B. Because taking the signal inside the bar instead of waiting for the bar close would get me closer to my stop, which means I might lose a few pips instead of taking the same loss on the bar close.

C. Early entry, and s/l is tight; re-entry is always possible.

D. The success of early entry is likely to bring a large number of accumulation points, far outweighing the negative impact of early entry mistakes.

5. Getting Emotional in the Moment - Trading from an emotional place, rather than from a place where your rules are well thought out and logical, may lead you to do something you will regret later. I've heard people say rules are meant to be broken, but that's not true. You shouldn't break the rules if you don't agree with them or if they don't work for you. Breaking the rules is an emotional response. Instead, the rules should be changed to something better; something you won't break anymore. So, follow your rules, and if you find you're violating them, change your rules. One thing that may help you avoid getting emotional during trading is to take screenshots and re-evaluate your charts without moving parts before placing a trade. If you see things the same way, then make the trade.

6. Have fun - if you want to make a full-time income from trading. Start enjoying now. Even these losses are helping you achieve your goals, so embrace them, welcome them into your life, and even invite them to sit at your table. It's okay to blame yourself for making a trading mistake, but don't get so angry that it ruins your day, or worse, causes you to seek revenge on the market or others. If you don't enjoy trading time. Maybe this isn't for you.

7. Which currency pairs can be traded? - You should not limit yourself. This is a great system, so you should trade every pair you feel comfortable with. You'll find that a lot of times, multiple pairings will give you triggers. My personal profile is set to 15 open pairs, watching 4 t/f per pair. It may seem like a lot, but one doesn't even have to open a pair unless they receive an alert from NLD or any other combination of indicator alerts from the multi-indicator alerts FerruFx wrote for us.

8. Volunteering can be a stepping stone - Spending some time helping the needy/others without thinking about compensation in return will exponentially fulfill your ambitions.
