From concept to profitable trading

I started this post to document the complete process of "from concept to profitable trading". This is a multi-year commitment where I will come up with a concept from scratch and build a profitable trading system.

idea

My goal is to become a professional trader, earn income through trading, and say goodbye to my day job in the near future. Trading has always been a passion of mine and I have been trading stocks and forex as a hobby for many years since 2001. I have been trading the futures market for the last year and wanted to apply similar concepts to my Forex battle plan.

I have a successful business career (still a work in progress), am just entering my 50s, and my children are now grown and ready to leave home. Those with young families know the challenges of feeding them and trying to move from stable employment to trade. With these responsibilities over, I can now pursue my passion.

I imagine most people at Forex Factory are in a similar situation. You love trading and are trying to figure out how to make it your daily job. I hope this journey helps some of you in some shape or fashion.

Much of the information on completing this process is detailed. I won't be writing a novel here, but sharing the information I'm working on via short videos (about 20 minutes). Short videos may be easier for people to understand rather than reading pages and pages of information. Additionally, I will create a YouTube channel called "From Concept to Profitable Trading" which will house the generated videos.

As you can see from my philosophy, I take this very seriously. Trading is a business and involves money, so it should be taken seriously. If you decide to weigh in on this topic (and we welcome you) – please be respectful, to the point, and transparent. People who work together learn from each other and continue to improve. As I will explain in some concepts, we fail, make mistakes and lose trades - it's part of the process and business. Finally, I believe in keeping it simple. No indicators will be used, just price action, structures and some drawing tools.

Open a $1,000 paper trading account with publicly viewable results for greater transparency - completed and attached to the thread

Adjust trade plan until positive expectations and profitability are achieved - Done

Open a live trading account with $1,000 and publicly view results for transparency - Done

Once $2,000 is reached, remove the $1,000 investment

Follow the trading plan and continue to expand your real trading account

Tools used on my charts

MT4 Renko Bar Chart Converter

This "indicator" will take your online chart and convert it into an offline average Renko chart. Since MT4 does not have Renko chart functionality, this file helps in developing/converting charts for analysis into average Renko charts. Offline charts are real-time and built from your online charts. Everything is the same, you can perform all functions, but you must stay connected to the online chart. For example, if you delete an online chart, then of course the offline chart won't work. I took this chart and set it up to measure the bar size based on ATR, which will automatically adjust as the ATR expands and contracts. To see longer term results (similar to H4, I used a 3x ATR setting and changed it manually). I have no affiliation with the company that generated it, but it is a one-time lifetime license worth $45.
