Channel MA Short-Term System - MT4/MT5 Resources
I have been trading for 12 years, and for most of that time I have made a living from the markets or market-related businesses. I have traded many systems, both my own and others, with varying degrees of success. I have chosen this system for about four years and it suits my financial goals, my trading style and my psychological state. I have been trading successfully and for many years I have not felt the need to try any other trading on my live account.
I decided to take the step of sharing and discussing it for two reasons: one is to give back to this community, where I've been lurking for many years and where I've gotten a lot of ideas and learned a lot. The second one is more selfish: I'm looking for help writing an EA for the system, since the technical work may not be too difficult and the benefits to all of us are certainly worth it. And, I want to share what I know so far about successful manual trading so that we all can be successful in automated trading as well. My schedule has been getting busier lately and I wanted to continue trading, but at the same time I felt that manual trading was starting to become a burden on me, and since I have a lot of experience with this simple system and have gained almost everything from manual trading, I felt like this was a logical step at this point.
System - General Content
I started trading with the Elliott Wave Theory (I still value this method very much and prefer it for market analysis because of its detailed insights into various scenarios), but at the same time I have always been fascinated by MA crossover systems because of their extreme simplicity. I always thought I could find the "perfect" MA crossover combination that would work universally and spent several years trying and testing such crossovers. As you can probably guess, I found that there was no such thing. I had started to have success with MAs when I used the Rainbow template (I still think it is great for identifying levels and diagnosing trends), but it required "analysis" and I wanted something simpler, faster, and easier to trade.
Then, about 4 years ago, a simple idea crossed my mind: MA crossover systems are perfect in trending conditions, but their main (and main!) problem is recurring small losses in sideways markets. What if I could find a way to avoid this noise and filter out most of it? This is how the idea of moving average channel trading was born.
I tested it and immediately noticed it was a huge improvement, even at first glance. Not too concerned about the "perfect" MA, I chose a channel defined by an MA I had used before (55) and tested it for a few days to find the signal line. I applied it retrospectively on a few pairs and it seemed to work. Then I introduced some stricter rules and the effect was the same. I started trading live (also taking rainbow levels into account) and within a few weeks I was consistently profitable. Then I started trading this system exclusively, and from then on I only trade this strategy, with some minor variations (money management, stop losses, scaling up, currency pair selection).
The system is very simple.
Chart settings
M15 chart (but the principle applies to larger charts as well)
55 EMA, applied to lows + 55 EMA, applied to highs = channel.
33 EMA is applied to the closing = signal line.
System rules:
Bull signal: Signal line crosses above the channel (33EMA should be used on closing crossovers, above 55EMA should be used on highs)
Short signal: The signal line crosses below the channel (33EMA should be used for closing crossovers, below 55EMA should be used for lows).
Stops:
Hard stop loss: 40-50 pips (depends on currency pair and situation)
No stop: Close and reverse on opposite signal.
Target:
Fixed target price: 40 pips, stop loss moves to breakeven when price reaches 20-25 pips profit. (requires a lot of management and only works when dealing with a few pairs)
Flexible price target: Set to 210 points and the trade is closed at the end of the trade (I've done this many times and it seems to be the best option).
No Take Profit Point: The trade ends with an opposite profit signal.
There are 2 entries:
Normal Entry : The crossover occurs under normal volatility conditions, with the price approaching the channel (a stop loss 40-50 pips away from the entry point will be placed on the other side of the channel, so the channel becomes a "barrier" between the current price and the stop loss). Transactions are executed immediately according to the rules.
Late Entry : Crossovers occur due to extreme volatility, with price moving away from the channel (more than 40 pips), so attempting to set a hard stop will result in the stop being placed within the channel, or on the same side of the channel as the entry point. In this case, the trade is not executed immediately, but the order is pending at the level of the signal MA (the order should be filled when the price touches the signal 33EMA again). As long as the signal is valid, the order remains valid and will usually be filled.
The purpose of late entry is to ensure that there is enough space and power to make a move in favor of the signal and that we do not enter the market at the end of the push. I find channels to be a pretty strong barrier, especially in situations like this, so I always aim to have channels protect my stops.
System advantages:
- Simplicity: So obvious that no further explanation is needed.
- All trades are made in the direction of the short-term trend. Absolutely no top or bottom options: great for traders who find it difficult to maintain discipline.
- Risk is controllable, but profit potential is high (if used without a fixed 40 pip spread)
- MA filters out noise and false signals up to 80% while still picking up early M15 signals to handle large swings.
- Can be used as an input system only and analyzed over a larger time frame (long term for those who already prefer other analysis methods).
- Even with a lot of failed signals, the losses are small, losing trades are quickly closed, while correct signals (with a higher number) can easily make 100-200 pips weekly profit.
- It is possible to trade a basket of currencies, focusing on overall equity rather than individual signals (I would like to explore this option with you here).
I'd like to use this system on a larger basket of currency pairs, but so far it's not possible because it's difficult to get all the signals and manage them if trading is done manually.
I read and appreciated a post on FF similar to "Set and Forget Basket Trading". These guys are doing exactly what I plan to do here, the only difference is that their signals are given by other indicators and are the same all week long. I like their work and appreciate their system, which seems to work pretty well despite its strict setup.
When traded as a basket, the channel system can be more versatile and we can enjoy the benefits of basket trading while still being able to adapt to market conditions very quickly because no matter how the market changes, we will never go against the trend by more than 40-50 points. If there is a big move in the market in favor of a certain currency, all the currency pairs involved will rise hundreds of points (more than 4-5 related currency pairs can reach more than 1000 points in a week). In volatile market conditions the system performs well, breaks even and may even generate small losses, but in strong trends (in any currency) the system makes huge profits. Considering that each currency has its own rise time, which may not coincide with other currencies, with a good EA we can be there every time the market moves quickly and not miss any big moves because the small chart it works on (M15) will push us into the market very early.
The EA must take into account the rules (especially delayed entry), can choose to accept all signals/crosses or only the first signal (changing the preference from long to short or vice versa), and can choose hard stop loss/take profit or flexible stop loss (close the position at the next signal). I wish we could discuss all of this here.
I'd be happy to provide any kind of feedback to anyone who tries it and work together to make it an automated system that generates at least 500 pips per month (I usually get more than this in manual trading). Please share your tests and let's make some money together!
