Percentage Volume Oscillator Indicator: Strategy, Setup and Free Download (MT4/MT5) Percentage Volume Oscillator Indicator: Strateg

Introduction: Volume alone cannot explain price

Every experienced trader knows the golden rule - volume precedes price . A breakthrough without volume support is a fake move waiting for a trap. Reversals supported by surges in volume are the real deal.

question? Most MT4 indicators only focus on price movement. They ignore the most important confirming factor in technical analysis: volume.

The Percent Volume Oscillator indicator for MT4 and MT5 bridges this gap. It applies MACD-style calculations directly to volume data, producing a histogram and moving average crossover system that tells you whether money is trending in or out before price confirms a move.

What is the Percent Volume Oscillator?

The Percent Volume Oscillator (PVO) for MT4 and MT5 is a momentum oscillator that measures the relationship between the short-term and long-term Volume Index Moving Averages (EMA). It displays the results as a percentage difference and plots it as a histogram with two moving averages in a separate sub-window below the price chart.

How to read it:

  • Histogram above the zero line (green bar): Volume momentum is bullish. More money flows into the market - confirming the price increase.
  • Histogram below the zero line (red bar): Volume momentum is bearish. Volume is declining or turning into selling pressure - confirming a downward price trend.
  • Blue Moving Average: The signal line is faster and reacts quickly to volume changes.
  • Magenta Moving Average: Slower baseline eliminates volume noise.
  • Moving Average Crossover: When the blue line crosses the magenta line, it signals bullish volume momentum. The opposite signal indicates bearish momentum on volume.
  • GRAY zero line: neutral reference point. The histogram above this line confirms bullish volume; the bar below confirms bearish volume.

The real strength of this indicator is that combining two confirmation layers —moving average crossovers and histogram polarity—gives you a higher probability signal than either component alone.

Percent Volume Oscillator vs. Standard MACD

PVO looks the same as MACD, but the underlying data is completely different. Here's why this is important:

Verdict: If you already use MACD but want to use volume to confirm breakouts and reversals, the Volume Percent Oscillator is the missing piece in your trading system.

Review: Pros and Cons

Here are our honest test results after running the indicator on AUD/USD, EUR/USD and GBP/JPY on the M30 to daily chart.

PROS (The Good)

  • Volume-Based Signals: Unlike most oscillators that rely solely on price, this indicator gives you the raw truth about where money is going - whether traders are actually putting money into the swings.
  • Double Confirmation System: Moving average crossover combined with histogram polarity creates a two-layer filter that reduces false signals compared to single signal indicators.
  • Non-Repainting: Once the candle closes, both the bar and moving average positions are locked. Past signals are not redrawn.
  • Breakout Verification: The single best use case - confirm whether there is real volume behind breakouts of support and resistance.
  • Clean visual layout: Color-coded histograms (green/red) with clearly separated moving averages (blue/magenta) make it intuitive to read signals even for beginners.

CONS (The Bad)

  • MT4 Volume Limits: MT4 reports volume, not actual volume. While tick volume correlates with actual volume on liquid currency pairs, this is a known limitation of all MT4 volume indicators.
  • Not a standalone system: Volume confirmations are very effective, but should always be combined with entry trend or price action indicators.
  • Lagging Fast Time Frames: As with any EMA-based system, signals on M1 and M5 tend to lag. The best results come from M30 and above.

Strategy: "Volume Breakout Confirmation" System

Raw crossover signals generate too many trades in range markets. To maximize accuracy we combine the Percent Volume Oscillator with the 200 EMA as a trend filter and only if the input cross plot and histogram are both consistent.

Settings and Settings

  1. Volume Percent Oscillator: Default Settings (12, 26, 9)
  2. 200 EMA: should be used to close positions (main chart)
  3. Timeframe: M30 or H1 (best signal quality)

1. “Volume Surge” Buy Setting

We look to buy when volume confirms bullish momentum in an uptrend.

  1. The Trend Filter: Price must be above the 200 EMA. This confirms that the dominant trend is bullish.
  2. The Crossover: The blue moving average crosses above the magenta moving average on the PVO indicator.
  3. The Confirmation: The histogram bars must be green and above the zero line.
  4. Entry: Buy at the close of a candle where all three conditions match.
  5. Stop Loss: Below the recent swing low (usually 20-50 pips, depending on currency pair and time frame).
  6. Take Profit: Target the nearest resistance level or exit when the histogram bars start flipping red or the moving averages cross in the opposite direction.

2. “Volume Exhausted” Sell Setup

We look to sell when volume confirms bearish momentum in a downtrend.

  1. The Trend Filter: Price must be below the 200 EMA. This confirms that the dominant trend is bearish.
  2. The Crossover: On the PVO indicator, the blue moving average crosses below the magenta moving average.
  3. The Confirmation: The histogram bars must be red and below the zero line.
  4. Entry: Sell at the close of a candle where all three conditions match.
  5. Stop Loss: Above the recent swing high.
  6. Take Profit: Target the nearest support level or exit at an opposite crossover signal.

Pro Tip: The Volume Percent Oscillator works extremely well near key support and resistance areas, channels, and triangle formations. When price reaches major levels and PVO shows a surge in volume, the likelihood of a true breakout or reversal increases dramatically.

Final verdict: Is the Percent Volume Oscillator worth using?

Rating: 4/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Volume Percent Oscillator for MT4 and MT5 fills a real gap in most traders' toolkits - volume confirmation . While 90% of indicators only analyze price, PVO can tell you whether money is actually following the trend. The two-layer signal system (moving average crossover + histogram polarity) significantly reduces false breakout entries compared to pure price indicators.

The MT4 quote volume limit is worth noting, but in reality, the quote volume for liquid currency pairs such as EUR/USD and GBP/USD is closely related to actual market trading volume. MT5 users have the added advantage of having access to real trading volumes from supported brokers. The indicator is lightweight, requires no redrawing, and is visually clean on both platforms.

Our advice: pair it with a trend filter like the 200 EMA and only trade when both the crossover and the histogram are confirmed. This method filtered out most losing trades in our tests.

Frequently Asked Questions: Frequently Asked Questions

Won't. The Percent Volume Oscillator indicator on both MT4 and MT5 does not need to be repainted. Once the candle closes, the histogram bar values and moving average positions are permanent and do not change on past bars.
While the indicator operates on every timeframe from M1 to monthly, our tests show the most reliable signals are M30 and H1 . These time ranges accurately balance signal frequencies. Higher timeframes such as H4 and Daily produce fewer volume-based signals but higher quality.
Yes. The Volume Percent Oscillator works on all instruments available in MT4 and MT5 - Forex pairs, gold, silver, indices and cryptocurrencies. Volume-based analysis is particularly effective for gold due to its high liquidity and strong volume-driven movements. Note: MT5 provides real trading volume data to support brokers, making PVO more accurate on the MT5 platform. For more gold analysis tools, check out our guide to the best gold trading indicators.
The standard volume indicator only displays raw volume bars. The Volume Percent Oscillator processes this data through an EMA calculation (similar to how MACD processes price), producing momentum-based buy/sell signals rather than just displaying the raw data. This makes it actionable for trading decisions.
Absolutely. The Volume Percent Oscillator pairs perfectly with RSI for overbought/oversold confirmations, Bollinger Bands for volatility squeeze setups, or any trend following indicator for directional deviations.
The indicator works the same on both platforms. However, MT5 has a slight advantage in that it has access to real traded volume (not just quoted volume) on supported brokers, making PVO calculations more accurate. If your broker supports real trading volumes on MT5, we recommend using the MT5 version.
