Introduction: A "smoother" Relative Strength Index

The Standard Relative Strength Index (RSI) is one of the most popular indicators in the world, but it has a fatal flaw: It is jittery. In volatile markets, the RSI moves up and down the line, constantly giving you false "overbought" signals.

The RSI on MA Indicator solves this problem by applying a moving average (MA) calculation directly to the RSI data.

Instead of one jagged line, you get two smooth lines (fast and slow) that interact gracefully. This creates a "crossover" system that filters out market noise and only alerts you when true momentum has changed.

If you like the idea of trading momentum but hate the false signals of standard oscillators, this indicator is the upgrade for you.

What is RSI on MA indicator?

This indicator is located in a separate window below the main chart. It essentially calculates the RSI and then plots two moving averages of that RSI value.

How to read your screenshot:

As shown in the image you will download, the indicator consists of two oscillating lines:

  1. Dark Red Line (Red): This is the moving average of the Fast RSI. It responds quickly to price changes.
  2. Lime Line (green): This is the moving average of the Slow RSI. It acts as a "baseline" or trend direction.
  3. The Signal:
    • Buy: When Red crosses ABOVE Green.
    • Sell: When Red crosses BELOW Green.

The Logic: Standard moving average crossovers (like price charts) often lag too much. By looking at the RSI itself , you get the speed of the oscillator and the smoothness of the moving average.

Review: Pros and Cons

Is smoothed RSI really better? This is our verdict for 2026.

✅ PROS (The Good)

  • Less Noise: It ignores the small "bounces" that cause traders to exit trades prematurely.
  • Clear Entries: The "red-green" crossover is objective. You don't have to guess whether the line turns "a little bit" or not.
  • Dual Purpose: It shows both Direction (slope of the line) and Momentum (gap between rows).
  • Versatile: Outperforms Gold (XAUUSD) and volatile pairs such as GBP/JPY .

❌ CONS (The Bad)

  • Lag: Any moving average will add lag. This indicator will send an entry signal after an absolute bottom or top has been formed.
  • Ranging Markets: In tight sideways markets, two lines will repeatedly cross (zigzag). You need a trending filter (see strategy below).

Strategy: The “Momentum Transfer” System

Example post recommends trading every intersection. Do not do this. In sideways markets, you will lose money.

To rank this strategy as the best, we added a Trend Filter to ensure we only trade with the dominant flow.

Settings and Settings

  1. RSI on MA indicator: Default Settings.
  2. 50 EMA (Exponential Moving Average): Applied to closing prices (main chart).
  3. Timeframe: H1 or H4 (best results).

1. “Smooth” purchasing settings

We hope to capture the new uptrend while the momentum is strong.

  1. The Filter: Price must be ABOVE the 50 EMA . (This confirms that the trend is upward).
  2. The Setup: Wait for the price to fall back to the moving average.
  3. The Trigger: Look at the RSI on MA window. Wait for Crimson (Red) Line to cross ABOVE the Green Line .
    • Bonus: If this crossover occurs, it will be stronger below the 50 level (oversold area).
  4. Entry: Buy at the close of the candle.
  5. Stop Loss: Below recent swing lows.
  6. Take Profit: Hold on until the red line crosses back BELOW the Green line.

2. “Smooth” sales setup

We want to short the market when momentum reverses.

  1. The Filter: Price must be BELOW the 50 EMA . (This confirms that the trend is downward).
  2. The Setup: Wait for price to rise to the EMA.
  3. The Trigger: Wait for the Crimson (Red) Line to cross BELOW the Green Line .
    • Bonus: If this crossover occurs, it will be stronger above the 50 level (overbought zone).
  4. Entry: Sell at the close of the candle.
  5. Stop Loss: Above recent swing highs.
  6. Take Profit: Hold on until the red line crosses back ABOVE the Green line.

Pro Tip: If the two lines are further apart, the trend is stronger. If they are squeezed close together, the market is shaking, stay away!

Indicator Settings: Custom Smoothness

When you turn on indicator input, you can adjust the sensitivity.

  1. RSI_PERIOD (Default: 14):
    • Standard lookback period. Lowering this value (e.g. to 9) will make it faster but noisier.
  2. MA_Period (default: various):
    • You can usually adjust the smoothing period of both lines.
    • Tweak: If you notice the signal too late, shorten the "Slow Moving Average" period slightly.

Frequently Asked Questions: Frequently Asked Questions

Will this indicator repaint?

Won't. Once the candle closes, the crossover is fixed. However, when a candle forms, the "red" line may jump up and down. Always wait for the candle to close.

Can I use it for reselling?

Yes, on the M5 or M15 time frame. However, for scalping, you must strictly adhere to the 50 EMA Filter rule, otherwise the noise will give you pause.

Is this better than a stochastic oscillator?

This is different. Stochastic is better suited for ranges. RSI on MA is better suited for trending movements because moving averages can smooth out false reversals.

Final verdict: Is it worth using?

Score: 4.5/5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐🌗

The RSI on MA Indicator is a great tool for traders who struggle with "trigger discipline".

Standard indicators often look confusing and make you doubt your trading. This indicator gives you clean binary signals: red above green (buy) or red below green (sell) . Simple, effective and powerful.
