Brief description

MetaCOT 2 CFTC ToolBox Indicators is a set of indicators that analyze CFTC reports (United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission) and allows you to chart COT, D-COT, TFF and CIT directly in the MetaTrader platform. These indicators are available in the source code, however, their work requires the special library MetaCOT 2 CFTC MT4 Toolbox .

MetaCOT 2 CFTC ToolBox supports the following types of CFTC reports:

For each supported report type, the following metrics are plotted:

Each CFTC report has 7 main indicators, and each indicator has 5 versions according to the report type. The following table shows the correspondence between metrics and report types. For some versions of the indicator, separate versions are available on the market. In this case, the name of the indicator contains a link to the individual version. Otherwise, the indicator is only available as part of this library:

Install libraries and indicators

To install and operate the indicator correctly, follow these steps:

Multiple indicators in one window

All indicators of the MetaCOT family are designed in a way that allows you to combine data in one window and use standard indicators. Furthermore, in addition to the standard functions, the following functions are available:

For example, we will create two COT indices in one window and calculate the moving average of one of them:

Likewise, you can use MetaCOT data to build other standard indicators.

RSI is built on the net position of the MetaCOT COT Netto position operator:

Export CFTC reports to CSV format and Excel

In addition to indicators, MetaCOT 2 CFTC ToolBox has the ability to export any data from any report to a text CSV file. The file can then be uploaded to a program used to process statistics, such as Excel. Saving data to a file is performed through the special script MetaCOT 2 Indicators Save Values In File. It receives the value of one of the 34 MetaCOT indicators and saves them in a text file in CSV format. The utility has the following main parameters:

Let's consider the practical problem: exporting the COT-Index in Excel for further analysis:

MetaCOT 2 CFTC ToolBox (Set of Indicators) MT4 - indicator for MetaTrader 4

(The folder location where you can find the required files corresponds approximately to: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\MetaQuotes\Terminal\Common\Files\MetaCOT\CsvReport, where UserName is your name in the Windows operating system).

Start Excel. Select the Data tab and click the From Text icon to export a CSV file. The export wizard starts. Select a previously saved file. Specify a semicolon as the column separator.

If done correctly, the values for the 52-week COT Index should appear in the table:

MetaCOT 2 CFTC ToolBox (Set of Indicators) MT4 - indicator for MetaTrader 4

The script saves all participant groups simultaneously in the corresponding columns. Likewise, you can export any CFTC report to Excel, as well as any metrics built on the report. For example, if you want to analyze the absolute positions of COT participants, select CFTC COT Absolute Positions in the CFTC indicator type and save the results.

The video below shows an example of exporting COT member net position (Netto Position) data in Excel:

for programmers

All indicators are based on the same algorithm:

Let's consider an example based on the MetaCOT 2 COT index:

Let's examine in detail how the COT index is calculated. Its calculation is divided into two stages:

Calculation of the COT index is expressed as the Get Index Value function (ToolBox.mqh file):

All other indicators of the MetaCOT2 series work in the same way.

MetaCOT 2 COT absolute position

The Absolute Position indicator shows the open position dynamics of the classic COT report (Commitment of Traders) or the number of traders in each participant group. It includes the following groups:

The following are the basic indicator parameters and their descriptions:

More details about the description of the indicator settings can be found in the blog " MetaCOT 2: Settings and Possibilities ".

Often, extreme values by one of the group members are a harbinger of a reversal in global markets. The indicator displays these values, indicating potential future reversals. The indicator can be combined with other indicators of the MetaCOT family, or multiple participant groups can be displayed in a common sub-window of the indicator. This enables a high degree of flexibility in conducting fundamental and technical market analysis. It is important to understand that this indicator is best used in conjunction with other indicators from the MetaCOT family to provide the most accurate and comprehensive analysis of market fundamentals.

MetaCOT 2 COT inner support position

MetaCOT 2 is a set of indicators and specialized utilities for analyzing CFTC reports. With reports issued by the committee, the position sizes and directions of major market participants can be analyzed, taking long-term price forecast accuracy to a new higher quality level that is unreachable by most traders.

The Market Participants Net Position indicator shows the difference between long and short positions in one of three trader groups, as well as total open interest across the market and the number of positions covered by non-commercial traders. The CFTC Commission’s COT (Commitment of Traders) report serves as the data source for this indicator. Here is the complete list of display groups:

Typically, an extreme value in the net position of one of the group members is a harbinger of a reversal in global markets. The indicator displays these values, indicating potential future reversals. MetaCOT 2 COT Index

The COT index is the most popular, efficient and simple indicator to determine the extreme overbought and oversold points of the market. It is calculated through the Stochastic Oscillator formula based on traders' net position data taken from the COT report (Commitment of Traders). The indicator's value points from 0% to 20% and from 80% to 100% are located in extremely overbought and oversold conditions in the market, indicating that prices frequently reverse after reaching these levels. The calculation is based on the net position and open interest of commercial, non-commercial and non-reporting traders.

MetaCOT 2 COT Williams Business Index (Willco)

The Williams Business Index (Willco), developed by Larry Williams, is the most advanced version of the standard COT index . Unlike the latter, Willco compares the extremes of the participant pool to the accumulated open interest. Therefore, Willco is a standard COT index weighted relative to the entire market. Like the latter, it is an oscillator whose value changes from 0% to 100%. The indicator's value points from 0% to 20% and from 80% to 100% are located in extremely overbought and oversold conditions in the market, indicating that prices frequently reverse after reaching these levels. Data on traders' net positions are used as the basis for calculation (see MetaCOT 2 Netto position indicator).

MetaCOT 2 COT Change Index

Movement Indexing was originally proposed by Steve Breeze and described in his book The Promise of the Trader's Bible: How to Profit from Insider Market Intelligence. It quickly became popular among traders analyzing CFTC reports and became in many ways a classic and unique tool for spotting rapid changes that lead to position imbalances among market participants.

This metric shows the change in the relative position of the participants in the form of a histogram and is expressed as a percentage. Its range is -100% to +100%, and the COT index or Wilco index is calculated based on the data. A reversal signal occurs when the absolute value of the indicator exceeds the threshold (default setting is 40%).

While other indicators in the MetaCOT series are trend indicators, the Movement Index is a momentum indicator, which shows rapid changes in the positions of market participants. Therefore, analysis of this indicator together with other indicators of the MetaCOT series becomes indispensable. Additionally, other programs that provide access to CFTC reports do not provide change indices. Therefore, the MetaTrader platform and the MetaCOT suite are the undisputed solutions for comprehensive analysis of CFTC reports.

It shows the difference between the long and short positions of a certain group of traders, as well as the total open interest in the market as a whole. This indicator analyzes supply and demand dynamics in major financial markets. An upward trend must be confirmed by an increase in demand for a commodity, while a decrease in price must be confirmed by a decrease in demand. The difference in these numbers gives an important signal of a potential reversal in the market.

MetaCOT 2 L-COT Index

The L-COT index is a classic COT index calculated based on data from major market participants. Since these data are relative and show the percentage of contracts held by major players relative to the total open interest, the L-COT Index corresponds exactly to the L-COT Willco indicator. Therefore, the L-COT index does not exist as a separate indicator.

MetaCOT 2 L-COT Williams Business Index (Willco)

The Williams Business Index (Willco), developed by Larry Williams, is the most advanced version of the standard COT index . Unlike the latter, Willco compares the extremes of the participant pool to the accumulated open interest. Therefore, Willco is a standard L-COT index weighted relative to the entire market.

For more details on how to use this indicator, see Larry Williams' book: Trading Stocks and Commodities with Insiders: Secrets of COT Reporting , and the article Meta COT Project - New Horizons in CFTC Report Analysis in MetaTrader 4 .

MetaCOT 2 L-COT Movement Index

Movement Indexing was originally proposed by Steve Breeze and described in his book The Promise of the Trader's Bible: How to Profit from Insider Market Intelligence. It quickly became popular among traders analyzing CFTC reports and became in many ways a classic and unique tool for spotting rapid changes that lead to position imbalances among market participants.

This metric shows the change in the relative position of the participants in the form of a histogram and is expressed as a percentage. It ranges from -100% to +100% and is based on the L-COT Index or the Wilco Index indicator.

For more details on how to use this indicator, see Larry Williams' book: Trading Stocks and Commodities with Insiders: Secrets of COT Reporting , and the article Meta COT Project - New Horizons in CFTC Report Analysis in MetaTrader 4 .

MetaCOT 2 CIT Index

The CIT index simulates the COT index. It is the most popular, effective and simple indicator for determining extreme overbought and oversold points in the market. It is calculated based on the Stochastic Oscillator formula from trader net position data obtained from CIT reports. The indicator's value points from 0% to 20% and from 80% to 100% are located in extremely overbought and oversold conditions in the market, indicating that prices frequently reverse after reaching these levels. The calculation is based on the net position and open interest of commercial, non-commercial and non-reporting traders.
