The Keltner Channel Trading Indicator is a trend following and volatility following tool that uses the Simple Moving Average (SMA) as the center line and two ATR-based bands.
This indicator uses moving averages to track trends and ATR (Average True Range) to adjust the channel width based on current market volatility:
- In highly volatile markets, channels widen;
- In low volatility markets, channels narrow.
Uptrend Scenario
On the 5-minute chart of the EUR/AUD currency pair, a bullish reversal signal occurs when the price breaks below the lower band and re-enters the channel.
If a bullish reversal candlestick occurs along with positive divergence in indicators such as the RSI or MACD, it reinforces the potential end of an oversold phase and the beginning of an uptrend.

Downtrend Scenario
The price chart below shows the NZD/JPY currency pair on a 30-minute time frame. In this trading instrument, when price breaks above the upper band and then returns to the channel, it may indicate that bullish momentum is waning and price may reverse.
If this return is accompanied by a bearish reversal candlestick, it provides a strong signal to consider entering a sell position.

Conclusion
When price breaks out of a channel and then returns to a Keltner channel, especially when combined with a reversal candlestick and divergence, it signals a potential trend reversal.
In overbought territory (upper band), these signals typically present selling opportunities, while in oversold territory (lower band), they usually indicate buying opportunities.
